Anne Lodermeier cruised through the first three innings Tuesday afternoon retiring the Panthers nine up, nine down. Trouble ensued in the fourth as Goodhue committed an error and Lodermeier uncharacteristically hit two batters to allow the Panthers to tie the game at five.
"She was meant to only throw a couple innings," Goodhue coach Chris Irvin said. "It was kind of hard to pull her at that point (after three innings), but I wish I would have made the change a little earlier."
Goodhue actually outhit the Panthers five to four, but senior reliever Katie Charbonneau allowed Pine Island to go ahead by one in the sixth inning.
The game could have been much closer if not for the play of Pine Island's Cede Finstuen, who robbed Meta Stern of a home run and Lodermeier of a double, according to Irvin.
"We've played our best two games in the last two nights against some of the best in the conference, so we're peaking at the right time," Irvin said.
With the loss, Goodhue fell to 3-15 overall and 2-11 in the Hiawatha Valley League. It plays in a tournament in Lake City on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
