Kate Opsahl of Goodhue finished second at the Elks Hoop Shoot North Central Regional Championship in the 8- to 9-year-old girls division.
She made 18 of 25 free throws March 12 in Iowa City, Iowa.
The regional championship featured competitors from Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Kate, a Goodhue Elementary School student, won four previous competitions to advance to the regional. She placed first at her school, district (Red Wing), region (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and state (Hutchinson, Minn.) Hoop Shoot events.
If Kate had won the regional, she would have had the chance to compete in the national competition in Springfield, Mass.
The Hoop Shoot is in its 39th year. More than 3 million children between the ages of 8 and 13 have participated in the contest since the fall.
