Despite racking up 10 penalties, No. 5 Red Wing upended No. 4 Mankato West in quarterfinal action of the Section 1A tournament Thursday.

"It's a concern moving into Saturday," Red Wing coach Mike Belisle said of his team's high volume of penalties.

The Wingers won 6-3 in Mankato, Minn., and advanced to play top-seeded Rochester Lourdes in the section semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday. The game will be played at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Red Wing suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 overtime loss when the two teams met Dec. 9.

Mankato West (16-8-2) went 2-for-10 with a man advantage. Red Wing goalie Sam Amendolar stopped 32 shots.

"He was our best penalty killer tonight by far," Belisle said.

Red Wing (10-17) jumped out to a three-goal lead on tallies from Taylor Hanson, Austin Anderson and Ryan Rehder, who scored on the power play.

"We came out all three periods and established the pace of the play five-on-five," Belisle said. "We didn't allow them a lot of open ice because we were always on the attack."

Goals by Mike Stegora and Alex Rezansoff (power play) and another tally from Hanson sealed the victory.
