A Zumbrota police officer was defending a woman from her husband when he shot and killed the man Monday night, according to preliminary investigations by the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Officer Rob Jarrett opened fire on Thomas Robinson, 37, after Thomas had fired multiple shots at his wife, Rebecca Robinson, 28.

“Officer Jarrett’s actions were necessary to save the life of the victim,” according to a sheriff’s office press release.

Thomas Robinson was announced dead at the scene. Rebecca Robinson was wounded and transported to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. As of Tuesday she was listed in fair condition.

A family member who was also present was physically unharmed during the exchange.

Jarrett had gone to the Robinson’s home, 350 Lincoln Ave., at 8:29 p.m. Monday to help Rebecca retrieve some personal property from the couple’s home.

Thomas Robinson then fired several shots at his wife and near a family member. Jarrett then shot Thomas Robinson.

As per police policy, Jarrett, a five-year veteran, is on administrative leave pending the review of this incident.
