Red Wing City Council moved Monday to extend the expiration date of its negotiations with Charter Communications for a new franchise contract from February to June 14.
Negotiations have been slow going, said city administration. But there has been some progress Council member Lisa Bayley said.
Meanwhile, the council authRed Wing City Council orized city administration to begin negotiating a cable franchise with Hiawatha Broadband Communications.
Cable franchises are not exclusive, city administration noted.
Red Wing City Council Monday reappointed Teresa Cheberiak to the Charter Commission. Meanwhile, the council tabled former Council member Carol Duff’s nomination to the Advisory Planning Commission; former Mayor John Howe made the nomination.
Council members said they wanted the new mayor — to be elected Feb. 8 in a special election — to approve the appointment before they ratify it.
Recreation Joint Powers Board
Red Wing Council member Peggy Rehder will replace Mike Schultz as the council’s representative on the Red Wing Recreation Joint Powers Board. Rehder’s peers on the council voted her on to the post.
In other news:
• City Council approved a variance request for Anderson Home Services to operate a scrap and salvage service at 2411 Old Zumbrota St.
• The council also approved a variance request for S.B. Foot Tanning Co. to build a two-story leather drying room onto the company’s building at 1875 Bench St.
Monday’s Red Wing City Council meeting lasted two and half hours. All council members were present.
