Golden Quill letter: City should cut until budget balances

In a famous Supreme Court ruling, Chief Justice John Marshall wrote that “the power to tax is the power to destroy.”

To the Editor:

In a famous Supreme Court ruling, Chief Justice John Marshall wrote that “the power to tax is the power to destroy.”

Apparently the Red Wing City Council likes having that power, and they’re willing to help destroy the chances of an economic recovery by passing both a property tax increase and a utility fee during a recession.

It’s especially disturbing that they want to add these utility fees to the bills of senior citizens and people with families who are most likely to be struggling right now.

Citizens of Red Wing should contact their council members and let them know we are not willing to stand by and watch them destroy the local economy with unneeded tax and fee increases.

Cut the city budget until it balances, just like families have to do every month.
