The Red Wing gymnastics team knew it would be overmatched in its Thursday nonconference meet against River Falls.

So the Wingers and coach Beth Mayer focused on individual skills and improvement during the meet, which River Falls won 134.70-119.80 at the Red Wing Area Gymnastics Center. Mayer said she saw some good things take place -- things that the Wingers can build on during the winter break.

The Wingers' only place finishers were Maria Furlong, Molly Hart and Carlie Sandstrom. Furlong took second in the floor exercise (8.975), fourth in the vault (7.95) and fifth in the uneven bars (7.425) and balance beam (7.775). Hart placed fifth in the floor exercise (8.125).

Furlong was third in the all-around competition with a 32.125 and Sandstrom took fourth with a 28.825.
