City Council approved a measure Monday allowing Red Wing Grain to build a tall grain bin near the western edge of the city despite concerns by some that it will be unsightly.

In a 4-2 vote, council approved the company’s request for a permit needed to build the 126-foot tall grain bin at 160 Cannon Bottom Road where zoning rules would otherwise prohibit such a tall structure.

Council member Dan Bender said his decision to vote in favor of the grain bin was difficult. He noted the city has designated a nearby stretch of Highway 61 to be the city's "scenic western gateway," and aesthetically the grain bin is a less than ideal fit.

“We also have a need to do things to help business expand in Red Wing,” Bender said. “And this is a major business expansion.”
