The Minnesota State Patrol identified the victim of this morning’s pedestrian crash on Highway 58 as Allyn Deobald of Red Wing.
The 18-year-old Red Wing High School student was listed in stable but serious condition, according to Fairview Red Wing Medical Center Nursing Director Jane Gisslen.
Troopers reported Deobald was on Pioneer Road crossing Highway 58 on foot at 6:50 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Michael Conroy, 39, Red Wing.
The State Patrol did not provide additional details on the circumstances of the crash, including who had the right of way at the time.
Red Wing School District Supt. Stan Slessor, who was with Deobald’s family at Fairview this morning, said the student was undergoing surgery on his shoulder.
“We are much relieved about that,” Slessor said. “People need to be reassured that everything is in good hands.”
Red Wing High School Principal Beth Borgen said teachers were briefed on the crash and notified students of Deobald’s condition. Slessor said some community members had been led to believe his injuries were life threatening.
Conroy was wearing his seat belt and was not injured in the crash, according to the State Patrol. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash, troopers reported.
