Letter: Hove pledges to keep taxes low

To the Editor:

I recommend watching a replay of the League of Women Voters Forum for City Council candidates on Channel 6. Clear differences emerged.

In the Wards 1-2 contest, John Sachen opened saying he would bring a “fiscally conservative approach.”

Minutes later, when asked how he would raise revenue, Sachen said part of the solution was to create “use” fees for parks. Sachen also wants to charge a fee to park at Red Wing boat landings.

Dean Hove’s answer to the same question: “A fee is a tax.” Hove continued, “People cannot afford any more taxes right now.”

Sachen sounds like an election-year fiscal conservative. Sachen would add to the already heavy burden of local taxpayers.

Hove said we need to hold the line on spending until our improving economy catches up and ruled out a tax increase in any form in 2011.

I don’t care about who calls themselves a fiscal conservative. I care about who acts like one.

Since Hove has kept taxes and spending down in the past, and pledged to do the same in the future, he has earned the titled true fiscal conservative. Hove has also earned my vote.
