Letter: Sheriff’s Office needs change

To the Editor:
Having been in law enforcement for nearly 20 years and, running for sheriff twice, I can honestly say that the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office needs a change. That change needs to be in the form of new leadership. I feel strongly about this and I know that Marty Kelly does too or he would not have thrown his hat into this race.
Campaigning is no easy task and, for a guy who holds two jobs, coaches football and raises five children, shows me he is dedicated and committed.
But this is what separates the two candidates in my opinion. Marty truly feels that is it time for change and his opponent feels that he is entitled to the position.
When someone feels entitled, there is no motivation to perform at a high level. He has been in his position for the last 12 years and during this time our jail population fell drastically under his leadership. He now vows to get the empty beds filled. In his current position, he could have done it already, but didn’t.
We are headed for status quo if this much needed change doesn’t take place. I am supporting Marty Kelly on Nov. 2.
