Letter: Fricke proposes more than cuts

To the Editor:
I really liked what Joe Fricke said in the Republican Eagle interviews (R-E, Sept. 25).
John Howe said it’s all about cutting state spending, period. Joe realizes it’s not that simple.
Cutting state spending passes the burden to local governments. If state aid to schools doesn’t keep pace with increases in operational expenses, school districts must seek tax levy increases. Joe knows the importance of funding our schools.
Some people say, cut taxes and cut spending. The news reported that the condition of Minnesota roads dropped from 1Oth best in the nation to 25th. Hiring companies to upgrade roads is expensive, but it also creates jobs.
People love to hear, “Elect me and I’ll cut your taxes.” Cutting taxes can result in lost jobs, fewer services, and a poorer quality of life. Joe talks of a tax system where all pay their fair share. Wealthy people and profitable companies should pay their fair share too.
How fantastic that we have a bright, young man of Joe Fricke’s caliber willing to take on this challenge. This year let’s not just elect the one who has the money to buy the most yard signs, but who’ll do what needs to be done.
