Eighth Street home catches fire
A thin haze covered downtown Red Wing Friday morning as firefighters responded to a fire at 473 8th St.
Kerry Johnson didn't have time to ask questions Friday morning as he awoke to a home in flames. He just got out -- fast.
"I woke up and there was fire," said the Red Wing homeowner.
Red Wing firefighters responded to a fire at Johnson's home on 473 8th St. at around 6:30 a.m. Friday. By 8:15 a.m., smoke was still pouring out of the upper level and firefighters were working to put out stray flames.
Johnson said everyone in the home managed to get out safely. His home and possessions, however, were likely a total loss.
"It wrecked, I'm sure, everything," he said.
The Red Wing Fire Department is investigation the cause of the fire, which originated in the upper level and spread rapidly throughout the house before firefighters arrived, according to an RWFD news release.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the majority of the fire within a half hour. Efforts to extinguish the fire completely took "several additional hours," the RWFD said.
The fire caused substantial damage to the entire house, with major damage reported to the upper floor and roof.
Two fire engines, two trucks and a Red Wing ambulance warrived on the scene. No injuries were reported.
