Editorial: Wait to help
The good citizens of Goodhue County are quick to help.By: R-E Editorial Board, The Republican Eagle
The good citizens of Goodhue County are quick to help. They show up with little or no prompting when disaster hits or tragedy strikes.
This week’s flooding is one instance when extras hands would hinder more than help. That’s because the high water came quickly this fall — unlike the spring floods — and will soon be gone.
Instead of asking for volunteers, the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office and the local American Red Cross pleaded for people to stay away. The last thing emergency personnel needed was having to rescue some helpful soul.
There will be plenty of opportunities to help later. If you simply must act, we suggest you send a check to the American Red Cross, Box 29, Red Wing, and then get ready. When authorities need us, they’ll let us know.
