Historical society calls for county support

Facing financial problems, supporters of the Goodhue County Historical Society advocated for continued financial support from the county at a Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday.

Society Vice Chairwoman Andrea Hamilton said a poor location, a leaking building and cuts in county funding and public donations have taken their toll on the organization, raising doubts about whether it can continue to sustain itself in the future.

"I would hope that we could work with you if you have any ideas. We desperately want to be around," she said.

Commissioner Dan Rechtzigel said a long-term solution to the society's financial problems would be to obtain a building of its own in a better location. The society currently rents its Oak Street facility from the city of Red Wing.

Other commissioners agreed.

"I think the consensus is to move toward getting your own building," said Commissioner Ron Allen.
