County signs letter advocating nuclear storage plan
A draft letter advocating a centralized temporary storage facility for spent nuclear fuel gained a nod from Goodhue County commissioners Tuesday.
The letter, addressed to the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Energy Future, criticizes the federal government for failure to address issues of nuclear storage.
Xcel Energy, which drafted the letter, aims to obtain approval by all Minnesota governmental bodies in the immediate vicinity of the Prairie Island and Monticello nuclear generating plants. The company operates both facilities.
Currently, used fuel is kept onsite at both plants in storage pools and dry storage facilities.
Units signing on to the letter could include the city of Red Wing, Goodhue County, the Prairie Island Indian Community, the city of Monticello and Wright County.
Meeting watch
The Goodhue County Board meeting was held at the Goodhue County Government Center Tuesday; it lasted approximately one hour. All commissioners were present.
