Unaffected by the egg recall

As hundreds of millions of eggs across the nation have been recalled amid links to salmonella poisoning, a number of local grocers and eateries say they've been unaffected.

As hundreds of millions of eggs across the nation have been recalled amid links to salmonella poisoning, a number of local grocers and eateries say they've been unaffected.

The reason is their providers don't supply them with the recalled brands.

"It just depends on who your provider is," said Richard Sursely, manager of the Red Wing Perkins restaurant. "We actually haven't had any issues."

While the recalled eggs hail from Iowa, Cheryl Koplin said Koplin's Village Market buys eggs that come from Minnesota farms.

"We've been lucky," Koplin said. She added, "We buy a quality product."

Hanisch Bakery owner Bill Hanisch said nearly the same, "Our eggs come from Wisconsin, so we didn't have any problems."

Econo Foods Assistant Store Director Colleen Zaudke said her store has actually seen a slight bump in sales after consumers found out the eggs there are safe.

Sursely said the news of the recall hasn't, from what he's seen, turned many people off to eating eggs. Hanisch said he hadn't sensed much consumer concern either.

Of the area businesses the R-E contacted, only local Wal-Mart officials said they had carried some of the recalled brands. Four of Walmart's egg suppliers -- Sparboe Farms, Dean Foods, Hillandale Farms and Cal-Maine Foods -- announced recalls, according to the company.

The company noted its Great Value brand was not impacted by the recall announced earlier by Wright County Eggs and Hillandale Farms of Iowa.
