Heavy rainfall and rising water forced closure of several Pierce County roads overnight. At 8 a.m. Today, several roads remained closed to traffic and residents along the Rush River were being evacuated.
Highway 63 north of Highway 29 closed during the night and was expected to be closed all day, along with County Road Y, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reported.
In addition, the Pierce County Highway Department also closed Highway 10 at County Highway A because of rising flood waters.
All of Highway 29 and the stretch from Highway 63 to 29, which was closed in the early morning hours, are open again, according to an 8 a.m. update.
“Many other county and town roads are washed out and closed at this time,” Deputy Derek Featherstone said in a press release. “Citizens are advised to use extreme caution while traveling.”
Around 3 a.m., the sheriff’s office reportedly was evacuating residents in Martell and El Paso along the Rush River due to flooding. The water was still rising at 8 a.m., authorities said.
Waters were expected to continue rising in the southern areas of the county as well. People are advised to monitor the situation in their areas.
