Political newcomer Joe Fricke was cruising to victory Tuesday in the Democratic race to succeed Sen. Steve Murphy in District 28.

At 10:35 p.m., Fricke led challenger Bruce Montplaisir 2,020 to 471.

“I’m really pleased,” said Fricke of Red Wing. “It’s humbling to see the support.”

Montplaisir, superintendent of Lewison-Altura schools, said he never expected to win and only hoped to raise issues surrounding education funding. The Plainview man said he will support Fricke heading into the general election, where he looks to challenge Red Wing Mayor John Howe, a Republican.
