Area notebook: Pair of academic stars recognized

Red Wing’s Trevor Doden and Lake City’s Amber Steffenhagen were among 431 students-athletes recognized recently by the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for earning 2010 Academic All-Conference in a winter or spring sport.

Red Wing’s Trevor Doden and Lake City’s Amber Steffenhagen were among 431 students-athletes recognized recently by the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for earning 2010 Academic All-Conference in a winter or spring sport.

Doden just finished his sophomore season with the Augsburg College men’s hockey team, while Steffenhagen was a senior women’s basketball player at Gustavus Adolphus College.

To earn the award, the athletes must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and compete in 50 percent of their team’s varsity regular season contests.

Jessi St. Marie of Zumbrota-Mazeppa recently wrapped up her freshman season with the University of North Dakota softball team. The Fighting Sioux were the 2010 Great West Conference tournament champions and finished with a record of 16-35.

St. Marie played in 20 games and hit .250 in 12 at-bats.

•Z-M also had two former softball standouts playing for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire this year.

Catcher Nikki Bromelkamp completed her sophomore season with the Blugolds, while pitcher Jess Hegseth finished her freshman year.

Bromelkamp played in 16 games and posted a .214 batting average in 28 at-bats. Hegseth finished with a 4-9 record on the mound in 22 appearances. Bromelkamp was chosen for the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Team.

The Blugolds finished with a 21-21 record.
