Area notebook: Bohmback helps Badgers win 21

Andy Bohmbach, the son of Red Wing’s Jim Bohmbach, is enjoying a successful senior season with the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team.

Bohmbach, a forward, has played in all 33 games for the Badgers and has nine goals and eight assists. The Badgers are 21-8-4 heading into this weekend’s series against the University of Minnesota and have clinched a home playoff game in the WCHA playoffs.

•Red Wing’s Liz Bauer is a sophomore on the St. Catherine University women’s hockey team. The Wildcats qualified for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs this season and earned the No. 2 seed.

St. Kate’s played No. 3-seeded St. Thomas on Thursday and won 4-3.

• The University of St. Thomas men’s swimming and diving team won the MIAC championship this season.

Competing for the Tommies were Red Wing junior Grant Frost, sophomore Dan Cedergren and freshman Tyler Moulton.

It was the first time since 1979 that St. Olaf College or Gustavus Adolphus College hasn’t won the title. The last time St. Thomas won this meet was in 1954.

The Tommies advance to the NCAA championships March 18-20.

•Red Wing’s Augie Lindmark is playing baseball for Luther College again this season. Lindmark is a sophomore pitcher.

As a freshman, he pitched 13 innings in eight appearances for Luther. The Norse will open the regular season Tuesday night, when they will face Carleton College at 9:15 p.m. in a double header in the Metrodome.

•Also playing for the Norse, Lake City’s Gina Klennert recently wrapped up her senior season with the women’s basketball team. Klennert played in all 25 games for the Luther and averaged five points and four rebounds per game. Luther finished with a 9-16 record.

K.C. Boldt of Red Wing and the Valparaiso University fastpitch softball team recently wrapped up a trip to the Rebel Spring Games. Valpo went 4-0 and has a five-game winning streak heading into this weekend’s War Eagle Classic in Auburn, Ala. Boldt is a junior outfielder with the Crusaders.

Angie Diercks and Kristy Guse of Red Wing are playing another season with the Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota fastpitch softball team. Diercks is a senior first baseman, while Guse is a sophomore pitcher. The Cardinals open their season March 18 at the Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif.

•Also playing softball in the MIAC is Red Wing’s Morgan Bohmbach. Bohmbach is a freshman pitcher for St. Catherine University. The Wildcats open their season March 27 in Orange, Calif., against Chapman University.

•Red Wing’s Andrew Bergeson and Goodhue’s Olivia Warren were recently named to the MIAC Fall 2009 Academic All-Conference team. Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Athletically, student-athletes in football, soccer, and volleyball must compete in 50 percent of their team’s varsity regular season contests. Bergeson just finished his senior season of football at Augsburg College, while Warren wrapped up her sophomore season playing volleyball at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
