Red Wing City Council voted unanimously Monday to deny a proposal to buy 340 acres on Mt. Carmel for $1.75 million.
Mt. Carmel residents, citizens from the greater community and the city's planning and sustainability commissions lobbied the council to ditch the plan to buy the land, which was to be used as a disposal site for treated wastewater sewer sludge.
The city will instead look to partner with area farmers interested in taking the sludge, often called biosolids, for use as fertilizer.
