Cannon Falls, Zumbrota-Mazeppa fail to qualify for Class A state jazz finals

Cannon Falls danced first Friday at the Class A jazz state dance team tournament in Minneapolis so the program’s coaches and dancers were able to watch all the other teams perform.

At the conclusion of the qualifying competition, Bomber Dance Team coach Carrie Williams concluded there were seven or eight strong teams, she said.

“I told the girls, ‘One good team is not going to make the finals, I hope it’s not us,’” Williams said.

Unfortunately for Cannon Falls, it ended up being the odd team out. The Bomber Dance Team finished seventh and Zumbrota-Mazeppa placed ninth, according to Williams. The top six teams advanced.

“I was disappointed because it was our strongest performance to date,” Williams said.

Marshall School of Duluth won its fourth consecutive Class A title. BOLD took second, followed by Aitkin.

“We’re going to move forward,” Williams said. “All we can do is focus on our high kick routine, which is stronger than our jazz routine. It always has been. Hopefully we’ll get a top-three (finish today).

Cannon Falls and Lake City will return to the Target Center today for the high kick competition, which begins at noon.
