Red Wing's local movie theater recently changed hands.

Evergreen Cinema 8, 140 Tyler Road, became Red Wing Cinema 8 after Red Wing natives Chris and Amber Brown closed on a deal Jan. 1 to buy the theater.

The previous owner approached the couple about six months ago, Chris said, with an offer to take over the business. His family owns the mall where the theater is located.

"We didn't know if we wanted to do it or not," Chris said, adding neither he nor Amber had experience running a theater.

But they went for it.

"We thought, 'Well it's a great opportunity,'" he said.

The Browns say they're happy with their decision and they're learning all the processes that go with running the theater.

"It's fun," she said.

The business has retained some of the former employees, while some went with the previous management to another theater.

The Browns said they'll be doing some things differently.

They're planning a grand re-opening Feb. 13 and 14 at which time prices will go down a dollar, Chris said.

The theater also will have earlier show times, which Chris said is in reaction to feedback he's heard from customers. The theater is keeping its hotline.

Both of the Browns graduated from Red Wing High School. They live in Woodbury with their young daughter and infant son.
