Letter: Local Red Cross short of funds

To the Editor:

The Goodhue County Chapter of the American Red Cross needs your help. The chapter is about $18,000 short in donations and special event income for 2009.

To help make up for the shortfall, and ensure future emergency response, the Goodhue County Red Cross is seeking contributions and support of the upcoming special events planned in the near future.

The Goodhue County Red Cross responds to an average of 12 disaster incidents, providing emergency clothing, food, shelter and essential medication, for those affected by the disaster. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free to the recipients.

The Red Cross also provides emergency communications for military personnel and their families, teaches CPR and first aid classes, and babysitting courses, and provides places throughout the county to donate blood.

Two upcoming special events you can support and have a evening out are:

First, at 6 p.m. Friday Jan. 29 at Hobgoblin Stoney End barn, there will be a benefit dinner concert featuring music by local artists in the group called the Hot Flashes and local pianist Matthew Rivera. During the concert and dinner Janena Rivera will do animal portraits from a favorite picture of your pet for a donation of $15 to the Goodhue County Red Cross. There is also a raffle drawing for several great prizes. The $20 dinner tickets can be purchased from board members, at the chapter office or the Hobgoblin. Dinner ticket stub is one chance in the raffle drawing. Individual raffle tickets can be purchased from the same places at $5.

The second is dining in at Applebee’s in Red Wing 5-9 p.m. Feb. 21-24. A coupon you can get from the chapter office or board members that will give the chapter 15 percent of your purchase as a donation to the chapter.
