A house fire broke out at 1812 W. Sixth St. shortly after noon today.

Red Wing police and fire departments responded to the scene.

The resident, an unidentified woman, escaped the fire safely, Fire Chief Tom Schneider said at the scene. The woman, wrapped in a blanket and being comforted by friends, appeared shaken.

According to Schneider, the woman left her home and returned roughly fifteen minutes later to find her house was on fire, at which point she called 911.

No flames were visible from the street, but smoke was rising from vents in the roof and firefighters were throwing burned clothes out of a second story window.

Firefighters are unsure how the fire started or where in the house it began, Schneider said.

The R-E will post updates as new information is available.
