Editorial: Open to Q Comp
While we don’t have a position on Q Comp, we endorse Supt. Stan Slessor’s move this weekBy: R-E Editorial Board, The Republican Eagle
While we don’t have a position on Q Comp —Gov. Tim Pawlenty's alternative education-funding plan that would tie teacher pay to student performance — we endorse Supt. Stan Slessor’s move this week; he notified the state of Red Wing School District’s interest in participating.
The letter doesn’t commit the district but does keep its options open should Minnesota become of 15 states chosen for federal funding.
The potential dollars are significant. Still, we understand the School Board’s reluctance to proceed because Q Comp presents apparent risks and local teachers have yet to weigh in.
The door remains open, and we encourage our qualified, competent teaching staff to remain open to the idea.
Slessor’s letter sets the stage for meaningful dialogue with teachers and thorough research. The district — teachers, administrators, board members and parents — have 90 days to decide whether Q Comp might work for Red Wing.
