Editorial: Check and make sure ice is safe

Despite a recent cold snap, ice fishermen, snow-mobilers, and the like should still be wary of the ice on local lakes and waterways.

Despite a recent cold snap, ice fishermen, snow-mobilers, and the like should still be wary of the ice on local lakes and waterways.

Just because we’ve been hit with a number of sub-zero days doesn’t necessarily mean the ice is safe for all activities. Another thing to keep in mind is that ice is not usually the same thickness over a single body of water.

Please, check the ice to make sure it is safe for the kind of activity you’re hoping to enjoy.

If you’re not sure what’s safe, you can check out the Department of Natural Resources’ Web site’s page on ice safety: www.dnr.state. mn.us/safety/ice/thickness.html. The Web site also offers safety tips for traveling on ice and helping someone else who might be in danger.
