Holidays have special meaning in the Olmos family.
In addition to observing Independence Day on July 4 and Christmas on Dec. 25 — and now New Year's Day on Jan. 1 — the family also celebrates the births of three of their four children on those national holidays.
Jazmin, in addition to being Victoria and Celedonio Olmos' third holiday baby, is their first daughter.
She was definitely looking forward to having a little girl join the family, Victoria Olmos said.
Jazmin, who arrived at 7:11 a.m. Friday at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center — the first baby of 2010 in Red Wing — joins big brothers Christopher, 7, who was born on Christmas Day; Rene, 5; and Roman, 3, the Fourth of July baby.
The little girl arrived early, according to her mother. She was due Jan. 12. She weighed in at about 6 pounds, and is doing fine, Victoria Olmos said. They plan to go home on Sunday.
The couple chose to name their first daughter Jazmin after the flower, Victoria Olmos said. She explained that they went to visit her husband's mother in Mexico, and the first thing she planted was jasmine flowers.
The Olmos family has lived in Goodhue since late August. Celedonio Olmos milks cows for a local farm and his wife is a homemaker. Christopher attends school locally, and Rene and Roman attend Head Start, so Victoria and Jazmin will have some girl time together when they get home.
