The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control has advanced a unanimous proposal that would develop a five-division basketball tournament series.

If approved, the model would feature four teams from each division qualifying for the tournament. The model also would establish a committee to review and recommend how schools are assigned within the divisions.

Once devised, the plan will proceed through the committee process next spring.

Currently the WIAA has a four-division model and small Division 1 member schools have asked to alleviate the large enrollment disparity that exists.

Discussions continued regarding the district football proposal. A final determination will come at the board’s Jan. 27 meeting.

At its December meeting, the board stated that regardless if the proposal passes or fails, traditional football season and playoffs will be modified to avoid a schedule of three games or more over a 10-day period from the regular season’s end through the second level of the playoffs.
