Red Wing Confectionery is taking its sweet stuff downtown.

The candy shop is leaving 1451 Hay Creek Valley Road and opening up a new location at 323 Main St.

“I’ve been looking for a downtown location for 2 1/2 years,” said Kathy Boos, who owns the confectionery with her husband, Dennis.

The couple bought the business in 2006 from longtime owner Cindy Smith. She operated the confectionery out of her home.

Boos said when previous downtown locations became available, the buildings just weren’t the right fit. But when the Galley Room left the Main Street building, owned by local developer Carolyn Hedin, Boos saw a space big enough to house the candy-making operation.

The confectionery has opened its new location, offering retail sales, and is in the process of a remodel. The company will move all its

operations downtown over the next few

months.

Boos said the building will be remodeled so customers can watch chocolates and candies being made and packaged, allowing the company to show off in a new way — one that promises to help draw downtown foot traffic.

The company also plans to expand to include fudge and ice cream by Valentine’s Day, Boos said. She has tentatively planned a grand opening at that time.

Red Wing Confectionery will serve coffee and espresso, as the company bought the Galley Room’s coffee and espresso equipment.

“It’ll be a fun place for people to come,” Boos said.
