Superintendents of the Missota Conference schools voted Tuesday at St. Olaf College in Northfield to allow Prior Lake to leave the league at the end of the academic year. The Lakers will be a charter member of the South Suburban Conference in the fall of 2010.

The superintendents first voted to waive conference bylaws, which require league members to alert the Missota by Sept. 1 if they intend to play in another conference the following year. The second vote approved Prior Lake’s departure. Both votes were unanimous.

Red Wing Supt. Stan Slessor said the additions of Chanhassen and Chaska high schools to the Missota next year made it easier for superintendents to make an exception to the bylaw.

It’s possible the makeup of the Missota could still undergo changes in the near future, and there was discussion at the meeting about the importance of providing the conference with advance notice if a school elects to join another league, according to Red Wing athletic director Matt Schultz.

The vote was not to suggest that “we’ve waived it once so now it’s open season,” Slessor said.
