Wabasha, Spring Valley celebrate fall

Spring Valley Dam Days will be Friday through Sunday, starting with food and live music Friday night. There'll be a quilt display all weekend at the library in this Pierce County community.

Saturday's highlights include a bike ride and a fun run in the morning; Art in the Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Handy Andy Park; children's games and activities all day; a garden tractor pull at 6 p.m., and a "Folliez" performance at 7 p.m. at Spring Valley Theatre. A classic car show will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Spring Valley Health Center. Classic cars will parade down Main Street at 3 p.m., and there'll be a parade of horses at 4 p.m.

Many activities will continue on Sunday. The grand parade will step off at 2 p.m., and will be followed by coronation of the 2009 Miss Spring Valley at the reviewing stand.

SeptOberfest gets under way in Wabasha. From noon to 6 p.m. there'll be the Pumpkin Topiary Contest under the bridge. Pumpkins, bases, glue and some decorating supplies will be provided, people can bring additional decorations. A $5 donation is requested. Register with the Wabasha Chamber of Commerce, (651) 565-4158.

Friday night there'll be a kickoff block party at Riverboat Lanes, with German food and beer specials, music, dancing and a brat eating contest.

Saturday's activities for kids - leaf art, eagle pumpkins, pumpkin painting - will run from noon to 3 p.m.

Side One will provide music under the bridge from 1 to 3 p.m., and there'll be riverfront carriage rides from 1 to 5 p.m.; cost is $10 per person. Closing the day will be a showing of "Rocky Horror Picture Show" at 7 p.m. at the Broadway Theater in the Mittel Schule.

Next week, from Wednesday through Friday, United Church of Christ is presenting the Apple Pie Project. Church members will make 800 pies; people can order them at (651) 565-3260 or stop by the church from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to buy them.
