Public invited to learn about Lock & Dam 3 construction
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold two information meetings this month to discuss upcoming construction at U.S. Lock & Dam No. 3 and allow the public to ask questions and express concerns.
U.S. Lock & Dam No. 3 will soon be under major construction.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold two information meetings this month to detail the project and allow the public to ask questions and express concerns.
The meetings will be:
• 5:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in Hager City at Diamond Bluff Township Hall, W9870 290th Ave.,
• 6:30 p.m. in Red Wing at the Red Wing Public Library, 225 East Ave.
Improvements at Lock & Dam 3 will include extending the lock's upper guide
wall 862 feet and modifying the channel to reduce the outdraft current that
pushes barges and towboats towards the gated dam.
Additionally, the weak upper and lower Wisconsin embankments that together help maintain the Pool 3 water surface elevation will be reconstructed.
The work will be completed under three separate contracts (navigation
improvements, upper embankment and lower embankment). The Corps anticipates
beginning construction in January 2010 and completing the work by Sept. 30,
2011.
