LONG BEACH, Calif. — Pat Kelly made his debut at the 2009 Area Code Games Wednesday night. His Chicago White Sox team committed four errors in a sloppy eighth inning to allow the Texas Rangers to rally for a 5-5 tie. The White Sox led 5-0 before the meltdown.

Kelly, who will be a junior at Red Wing High School, was 0-for-3 at the plate. He grounded out sharply to shortstop and second base, while also striking out.

He started at second base, moved to shortstop in the sixth inning and played the ninth back at second. He was flawless in the field with six putouts.

The Rangers made three costly errors to allow the White Sox to grab an early lead. The White Sox pitchers struck out “something like 15 hitters” in the first six innings, according to Kelly’s father, Jim Kelly.

The game was played at Long Beach State’s Blair Field.

Kelly’s White Sox get a break today before returning to action at 5:30 p.m. PST Friday against the Washington Nationals.
