The world's biggest boot celebrated its homecoming Tuesday morning in a parade through downtown Red Wing.
Locals and members of the media lined the streets to gaze at and snap pictures of the 16-foot high boot, manufactured by the Red Wing Shoe Co. The boot is also 20 feet long and 7 feet wide.
"To give you some sense of scale, it would be way too big for the Statue of Liberty to wear," Red Wing Shoe Co. President Dave Murphy said.
After taking a morning stroll through downtown Red Wing, the leather behemoth was placed inside the Shoe's new factory store at 315 Main St.
The boot was created in 2005 as a way to celebrate the company's 100 anniversary, Murphy said. For the next two years the boot toured the country visiting county fairs and other events before going into storage.
The boot in its upright position was too tall to enter the store and workers had to tear the boot down to place it inside the building.
The new store, which opens Aug. 3, will double as a museum for the company. The store will feature a number of displays aimed at informing visitors about the company's history, Murphy said. He added the displays will include original Shoe advertisements created by Norman Rockwell.
Shoe employee Gerald Anderson pulled the boot on a trailer with his brother's tractor. Anderson, a six-year Shoe employee, works in the company's shipping department.
