Area students came out ahead of their peers statewide in most subjects on the latest Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exams.

Results recently released showed area students generally gained higher scores on the exams taken last November than the average scores for students elsewhere in Wisconsin. It's the third straight year that has been the case.

The testing covers grades three, four, five, six, seven, eight and 10. Students in all of those grade levels are tested for reading and math. But only grades four, eight and 10 are also tested for language arts, science and social studies, as well as reading and math.

Local results reported to the Ellsworth School Board last month, including subject, grade level, local percent score and state percent score (for proficient and advanced combined), were:

--Reading, third grade, 86.8 (Prairie View), 69.7 (Hillcrest), 79; fourth, 86.8 (Prairie View), 84.6 (Hillcrest), 81.6; fifth, 76.8, 81; sixth, 87.5, 83.3; seventh, 93.7, 85.7; eighth, 93.8, 84.7; 10th, 78.2, 74.9.
