Willard F. Payzant, 81, died at his home in Red Wing, Minn., Tuesday, May 26, after a short bout with cancer. He was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Aug. 13, 1927, to Floyd and Florence (Helle) Payzant. He attended Wilson School in St. Paul.
He joined the U.S. Navy Seabees at age 17 where he attended electrical school at Port Hueneme, Calif. He was honorably discharged in late June 1946.
@Normal: He married Pauline Greski from Moose Lake, Minn., on Feb. 23, 1952. They moved to Stockholm, Wis., where he was a rural letter carrier for 23 years. He retired due to disability. Later, he took law enforcement schooling and was in police work for four years. They moved to Red Wing in 1985 where he took a position as building manager at the Pottery Place. After three years, he fully retired.
He was a member of New Life United Pentecostal Church in Red Wing and also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a longtime member of the NRA and taught firearms safety for the NRA in Wisconsin. He enjoyed hunting, and also fishing at their private camp in Saskatchewan, Canada, for 22 years. He loved writing poems and short stories, doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles, woodworking, model trains and photography, and could repair almost anything.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of over 57 years; six sons, Stephen of Red Wing, David (Maria) of Monticello, Minn., Mark (Susan) of Farmland, Ind., James (Rebecca) of Oakdale, Minn., Joseph (Teresa) of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Nathan (Julie) of Silverdale, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean (Bill) Myrick of Tacoma, Wash.; one stepbrother, John (Lynne) Cooke of Bloomington, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing. Burial will be in the Burnside Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday, May 29, from 5 to 7 p.m., and one hour prior to the service Saturday.
