AUSTIN, Minn. — Senior Nicole Lubahn provided the offense and a pair of seventh-grade pitchers nearly led the Knights to a surprising visit to the final four of the Section 1A Tournament.
Kailee Berquam fanned 15 in a complete-game effort against second-seeded Randolph in Kenyon-Wanamingo’s 8-4 upset in the first game.
Classmate Siri Sviggum fell behind early in the nightcap against top-seeded Blooming Prairie and went on to lose 8-3. Four of the runs against Sviggum were unearned, including the last three in the sixth inning.
Berquam struck out the first six batters of the game and never trailed in a dominant performance in the circle.
“She grew up in a big way tonight,” K-W coach Matt Nelson said.
While the youngsters were throwing darts, Lubahn had her way at the plate. She finished 4-for-5 against Randolph and went 4-for-4 in her final game for the Knights.
Alyssa Way also homered in the first game for the Knights, who end the season with a 7-17 record and having vastly outperformed their seed.
