First District Court Judge Timothy Blakely should be removed from the bench, according to the Minnesota Board on Judicial Standards.

The board believes Blakely, who serves as a part-time judge in Goodhue County, violated the state's judicial code of conduct by using his position as a judge to benefit himself financially.

A fact-finding panel - consisting of one retired justice, and two retired judges - in April found that Blakely directed divorce mediations to his own divorce lawyer in exchange for a $60,000 reduction in his legal fees. The panel heard evidence on the matter during a hearing last November.
