ELK RIVER, Minn. - Burnsville, the runner-up in the Class AAA state tournament a year ago, ran away with Tuesday's 21-team Elk River Invitational with a round of 347.
Red Wing held off a strong contingent vying for second place, posting a 367. White Bear Lake was third at 368 and Stillwater took fourth with a score of 370. Edina and Forest Lake tied for fifth at 371.
"Second is a good finish for us," Red Wing coach Mark Herzog said. "We've never ever shot in the 340s here. That's a fantastic score."
Forest Lake's Betsy Kelly was medalist at 78.
Red Wing's Rachel Oeltjen returned from illness to post an 87. Danielle Brooks carded a 90 and Katie Kesti finished at 94. Ashley Brooks rounded out the scoring at 95.
Marisa Toivonen (98) and Anna Busch (104) also competed.
The Wingers return to action today at the Alexandria Invitational for their third competition in as many days.
"I don't think they'll wear down," Herzog said. "They played better today than (Monday) and I hope we'll play even better (today)," Herzog said.
The competition begins at 9:30 a.m.
