Art, music to be featured at Depot Gallery

Receptions for two new exhibits at the Depot Gallery — one featuring mosaic creations and other spotlighting wine labels — are planned next weekend at the gallery, 418 Levee St.

“Doin’ the Depot — A Day of Music, Art and Wine” will run 2 to 8 p.m. April 18. What-Kins Shop of Wanamingo will serve a sampling of party products.

“Rome to Red Wing - Mosaics in Minnesota” will take center stage from 2 to 5 p.m.

The High Street Strings will provide live music, and a program is planned at 4 p.m., including introduction of artists.

“Mosaic artists from around the state have brought artwork to the Depot Gallery for this show. Included in the show is a glistening cut-glass fish, an enormous ‘Creation’ egg, a Medusa, the torso of a woman and a skeleton sitting on a chair,” arts director Dan Guida said.

Red Wing mosaic artist Deb Wasmund’s contributions to the show include a “Pretty Red Wing” table and a unique maternal triptych.

Among featured artists in the Minnesota Mosaic Guild show will be award-winning stained glass mosaicist Barbara Benson Keith.

Two of her works in the show also are illustrations in her children’s book, “The Girls and Boys of Mother Goose.”

Earlier on April 18, Keith will read from her books at 10 a.m. and signing copies at 10:45 a.m. at The Best of Times Bookstore in Red Wing..

From 5 to 8 p.m. the focus will turn to the Falconer Winery Wine Label Show and Wine Tasting, Guida said. Patchouli, a guitar and vocal folk duo from Maiden Rock, will provide the entertainment and Falconer Vineyards will offer a taste of wines.

A program announcing the artwork selected by the Falconers as the winning entry in the competition is set for 7 p.m. Participating artists will be introduced.

“This show is an exciting partnership between the Depot Gallery and the local Falconer Vineyards,” Guida said.

Artist members of the Red Wing Arts Association created the work for this show, he explained - Sarah Singer, Ted Horn, Maggie Paynter, Lori Horsic, Pamela Kirton, Karen Clarke, Dan Wiemer, Art Kenyon, Chap Achen and Werner Pipkorn.

From the submitted pieces, the Falconers will select one for the label of a new wine.

Both the mosaic show and the wine label show will be on display through May 11.
