The Red Wing Photography Club began in January 2008 with a simple conversation between Jeff Markus and Mary Ouret regarding their shared love of photography.
"Red Wing is an extremely photogenic area" Oaret said. "Jeff and I both felt that other people in the area would have a similar passion for photography. This was the basis for the formation of the Red Wing Photography Club. "
The first club meeting was held in March 2008. The conference room was tight but manageable, recalled Marcus, the club treasurer.
"But we had no idea that nearly 100 people would show up for the second meeting," he said. "We were caught off-guard by that, but there was no looking back from that point forward. The Photo Club has become an extremely engaged organization."
In the year since, the club has sponsored several educational programs, photographic outings, a contest for the new KCUE/KWNG offices and a Holiday Stroll fundraiser for the Friends of the Sheldon.
On April 18, the club will open its first members' show. This is a non-juried, non-themed, non-competitive, not-for-sale exhibit.
The objective is for members to share their favorite images. Members can exhibit up to three photos each.
The public exhibit will open at 3 p.m. April with music and refreshments.
The Red Wing Photography Club is a non-profit organization focused on the love of photography and not the equipment. Members include photographers of all ages and skill levels, from children all the way up to professionals.
Club meetings are 7 p.m. the third Monday of each month at the First United Methodist Church, 403 East Ave.
