A Red Wing man is suing a former Fairview Red Wing Medical Center doctor for malpractice.

The civil lawsuit filed last month on behalf of Charles J. May alleges Dr. Anthony Novak permanently injured and disfigured May's eye socket in 2006 with improper reconstruction surgery.

May's lawsuit also claims Novak, who specialized in ophthalmology at Fairview Red Wing, did not refer him to an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

Novak no longer works at Fairview Red Wing. He currently runs Eye Surgery & Laser Centers in River Falls and Hudson, Wis.

The lawsuit claims May has paid for medical care and treatment for his damaged eye, including multiple surgeries. May must also pay for future treatment, according to the lawsuit.

May cannot carry out normal daily activities and has been embarrassed and emotionally distressed because of the eye damage, according to the lawsuit.

May is seeking more than $50,000, the standard amount applied for in lawsuits.

Novak is board certified in ophthalmology. He has 17 years of experience, according to the Eye Surgery & Laser Center's Web site.
