Is there a home out there for Big Bear?

A fundraising silent auction involving Big Bear, a 4-foot tall stuffed teddy bear donated by a little boy to help out other animals, will continue for two more weeks in the lobby of Associated Bank, downtown Red Wing. The bear auction is being sponsored by the Goodhue County Humane Society.

Big Bear, after years as bedside companion to a young animal lover, has been on display at the bank. The silent auction was supposed to end last weekend.

However, Humane Society board member Cicely Moon said, the bid sheet was filled with three large bids that apparently were just pranks. Officials have not been able to reach anyone using the phone numbers accompanying the bids.

The problem, Moon said, is that since the false bids ranged up to $500, no legitimate bids were received.

Associated Bank has agreed to let Big Bear hang around until Nov. 11 to give serious bidders a chance to buy him. Anyone who would like to place a bid should call her at (507) 263-7050. “But only serious bidders,” Moon stressed. She does want to have to call the little boy again with the bad news that she couldn’t find a home for Big Bear.
