Letter: Halt tax hikes starting with schoolsThere seems to be no end in sight.

To the Editor:
There seems to be no end in sight.
Food prices are climbing, heating costs make it almost viable to burn dollar bills instead of gas, and we will likely never see gas below $3 a gallon again. As the cost of living sky-rockets, families throughout the country have been forced to take hard looks at their budgets, and in most cases, adjust their style of living to some degree.
In addition to these things, we will soon be asked to cough up more money to the school district to help fix its budget woes.
Higher taxes? Is this really what is best for our community?
Consider that of the 226 non-metro communities surveyed by citizensleague.com, Red Wing pays higher property taxes than 83 percent of them.
I must wonder, at what point will this trend stop? When we are No. 1 in highest property taxes?
It is time to cut our losses and move on. “Staying the course” will only lead to a tax base bled dry. I know how I will be voting this season.
