Letter: Countering Iran’s nuclear threat

To the Editor:

A recent letter to the Republican Eagle (July 10) left an incorrect impression about Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s position on congressional resolutions involving Iran, and I am writing to set the record straight.

There are currently two congressional resolutions on Iran’s nuclear program — one in the House and one in the Senate.

The Senate resolution, which Klobuchar signed and supports, does not include any provision calling for a naval blockade of Iran.

In fact, it specifically calls on the United States government to use diplomatic and economic measures, not military tactics, to deal with Iran. It also states that nothing within the resolution can be construed as an authorization to use military force.

Iran continues to process highly enriched uranium, the critical component necessary for the development of nuclear weapons, in defiance of repeated U.N. Security Council resolutions and International Atomic Energy Agency agreements.

The senator believes that allowing Iran to possess nuclear weapons would pose a serious threat to U.S., regional and international security. She is committed to preventing Iran from acquiring or developing these weapons, but she has stated clearly that the most effective strategy will be strong economic, political and diplomatic measures.
