LUND -- A man in his late 40’s was taken to Wausau area hospital on a psychiatric hold early Thursday, six hours after he suggested he might harm himself, then fled with a gun into a wooded area near his home near the Pierce/Pepin County line.
Pierce County’s emergency response unit was called out about 11:30 p.m., Wednesday, after authorities were alerted by a family member, according to Sheriff Nancy Hove.
Although it wasn’t verified, one report alleged the man had fired at least one round from a handgun before he disappeared, according to Chief Deputy Neil Gulbranson. That prompted the ERU activation.
Twelve officers from Pierce County and Pepin County deputies were also assisted by a helicopter from the Minnesota State Patrol for a time, Gulbranson said.
A canine officer from Red Wing was also placed on stand-by but didn’t respond.
The man appeared uninjured when he was found by a deputy about 5:30 a.m.
It wasn’t known whether he was transported by Maiden Rock Area Ambulance or sheriff’s squad to Wausau.
