John Joseph Haneca, 87, Lake City, died Saturday at the Lake City Medical Center. Born April 12, 1921, in Ghent, Minn., to Camille and Leona (VanPrieze) Haneca, he grew up on farms in Woodlake and Cottonwood, Minn. In 1939, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps which brought him to Lake City. On Jan. 14, 1942, he married Catherine M. Murphy at St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake City. He was employed by Gillett Eaton from 1941 to 1952 in Lake City. In 1952, the family moved to Minneapolis and he worked for Honeywell as a tool maker until retiring in 1983. The couple returned to Lake City, where he was a member of St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed tinkering and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine; four daughters, Mary Jean Gaustad and Catherine B. Haneca, both of Columbia Heights, Minn., Theresa Marie Cermak of Mounds View, Minn., and Julie Ann (Jeff) Diepenbrock of Lake City; two sons, Charles of Columbia Heights and Michael (Gigi Miller) of Lake City; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Bertha Blomme of Marshall, Minn.; and one brother, Joe (Margaret) of Cottonwood, Minn. He was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, one infant daughter, and one son, Patrick.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake City with the Rev. James Russell and Father Donald Leary officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schleicher Funeral Homes, Lake City Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. A rosary service will be held at 4:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
