Pierce County woman dies after jumping off Hudson bridge

A 48-year-old Pierce County woman died today, after she jumped off the Interstate-94 bridge over the Saint Croix River at Hudson.

HUDSON - A woman jumped from the east-bound side of the Hudson Bridge at approximately 8:30 a.m. and died at the scene. Authorities cleared the scene at about 10 a.m. and the woman's body was taken to O'Connell's Family Funeral Home in Hudson.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's Department reported that the victim has been identfiied as a 48-year-old Pierce County resident.

Witnesses reported that the woman stopped her vehicle on the eastbound shoulder of the bridge, about 100 yards west of the Wisconsin shoreline, leaving her 11-year-old daughter in the vehicle. The woman then climbed the railing and jumped to her death.A chaplain had been requested to come to the scene to meet with that individual. A chaplain was called to the scene to meet with the daughter.

The identity of the woman is being withheld until family members are notified. The department said the child is now being cared for by other family members in Wisocnsin.

The victim landed on the ice under the bridge. Since the incident was closer to the Wisconsin shore line, so the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department will conduct the investigation.

Washington County (Minn.) also sent a dive team to the location, but the body was removed from the ice by a Washington County air boat. Others responding to the scene included the Minnesota and Wisconsin State Patrols, Hudson Police Department, Lower St. Croix Valley Fire and EMS and the DNR.
